Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
« on: September 20, 2007, 08:13:02 AM »
It is possible to to some optimization for search engines in SOS Webpages.

Title and Matatags

Click 'Meta' when editing a page.

H1 Tags, STRONG, and Other

These are valuable to Google and others.  All "Headings" on the top of sections are tagged as <h1>, so put keywords in the headings.

Also, by clicking "HTML" in the editor, you can add more h1 tags, as well as h2, h3, etc.

Now that I've done this, I noticed something I would like to do.

I would like to add alt tags to pictures in the sections.  Or at least use the heading text as the alt tag.

Good suggestions, we'll probably just use what is in the heading.  Although the ability to optimize was considered in development, it is not something many novices think about.  Adding too many options will make the system confusing to some, so I left the ability to change the alt tag out.

My understanding is that Google ignores meta-tags. I think Yahoo does use them. My suggestion is to maintain a list of key words in two places: in the meta-tag area and also on one of the site's pages. Its also a good idea to write keyword-rich text on your pages.

If you are willing to pay for cost per click ads with Google or yahoo, search engine placement is less important because you can buy your way to the top of the sponsered ad impressions.

I am not sure about Yahoo, but keywords are not the most important factor for high search placement with Google. The single most important factor is being linked from other websites.
